White Rose Squares Boat Trip

White Rose Squares Canal Trip on 4th July was everything you envisage an English summer's day should be - nice warm sunshine, peaceful scenery, and the gentle chugging of the engine of 'Dalesman', a 50 seater wide beamed narrowboat that took us along the Leeds-Liverpool Canal from Skipton for a three hour cruise.

Our group of 23 were well looked after, enjoying a superb lunch provided by Skipton Boat Trips. The presentation of the boat was excellent, and we had plenty of room to move around and chat, eat and drink and enjoy the ever-changing view. Cruising towards Keighley and back, unaware that the main road is just next to the canal, we experienced the novelty of swing bridges, and saw plenty of wildlife - herons, fluffy black signets and Canada Geese. A touching RAF memorial on the canal bank at Bradley, paid tribute to the crew of Polish Airmen whose Wellington Bomber had crashed, with no survivors, on a routine training flight on 23 September 1943.

Closer to Skipton, climbing roses covered the walls of the canal-side buildings, many redeveloped into apartments overlooking the water, and those lucky enough to live on their boats looked on as our happy group returned to the bustling centre of Skipton. A lovely way to spend an afternoon, and one likely to be repeated.
