White Rose Squares Graduation 2018

Our Graduation Evening on 4th February represented the culmination of just over one year learning all the Basic and Mainstream moves.

So it was with great delight that 8 Beginners Graduated successfully to gain their certificates and that coveted gem - a White Rose Squares Club Badge. They also received complimentary copies of Let's Square Dance magazine, and a Club Directory, courtesy of the British Association of American Square Dance Clubs (BAASDC). The directory lets everybody know all the clubs they could visit to dance at, now they have Graduated. Two more people, who were unable to join us on 4th, will also graduate very soon. So we shall have 10 more Graduates at the club.

The evening started with dancing to Club Caller Cliff Anderton to steady the inevitable nerves. Our Judge, who had apparently been delayed in a traffic jam(!!), then arrived with gusto. Judge ''Rage Rebel Horibbless'', a groucho who had come by a circuitous route from Mexico (initially scaling the wall to the USA)was here - and all that way for our Graduation!

The Graduation Caller, Gene Turner, was at the ready, and three squares of Beginners and Angels - identified appropriately by L-plates and Angel Boppers concentrated hard under the steely gaze of Judge Rage Rebel Horibbless. The results were out.........all had passed!

We celebrated with a special cake and supper. But the evening was far from over.

The traditional Candle Ceremony followed where new Graduates are welcomed into the world of Square Dancing with emphasis on the values within square dancing of Accomplishment, Patience and Understanding, Friendship, and Joy which we hold dear. In the ceremony membersof the club give short readings to the new graduates by candlelight as new graduates moves to each corner of a square.

Then Tom Brockie, Chair of White Rose Squares presented badges and certificates, and gifts of thanks to the Callers and Judge. We ended the evening dancing to Cliff Anderton and Gene Turner, an impressive duo when they Call in unison.

White Rose Squares acknowledges grants from BAASDC and the Yorkshire Federation of BAASDC towards publicity for the class. Our next Beginners' Class will start in January 2019.

Who was the man in the Mexican hat - John Kozyra, Caller at Chain Gang!

And I wonder if it registered with our new Graduates that visitors to the club that night, Simon and Trudy Fielding, (who had called a dance the previous night at Chain Gang) are non other than the President and Vice-President of the Square Dance Callers' Club of Great Britain (SDCCGB)!
