White Rose Squares Boat Trip 2016

Summer was here once more and on 2nd July and White Rose Squares took another trip on the Leeds - Liverpool Canal aboard Dalesman, this time heading towards Gargrave from Skipton.

It was early evening and, since since the weather was rather damper than we had hoped for, our hearty pie and pea supper was very suitable. The roomy boat allowed us space to catch up with our guests, and on all the news. Those who go to square dances will know that time to chatter is limited once you are up in a square - you need to listen to the caller! (We catch up with everyone's news between tips.) So social events like this give everybody plenty of time to chat.

Pausing between eating, drinking and talking we watched the crew member - who had perhaps drawn the short straw that night! - run along the towpath to open and close all the swing bridges as we sailed along. We quickly reached the outskirts of Skipton and, with the A65 in the distance, floated along not disturbing about a dozen swans that were resting in the fields alongside the canal. A very pretty sight. Yes, it was a little rainy, but we were rewarded with the brightest double rainbow you could imagine. And we could even see where the pot of gold was likely to be - if only we could have got off the boat!!
