White Rose Squares Birthday Dance 2022
Alhough our club has been open since last September after the Covid pandemic had stalled us for more than a year, and we had determinedly held our usual Dance in October, it has nevertheless been a time when we have been watching square dance clubs re-starting throughout the country and hoping that the events we have planned would be well supported.
We have been fortunate that many Callers have, like our club, tried to keep square dancing on the map after such a difficult time, and many dancers have started to return as they feel more safe, and clubs have done what they can to alleviate anxieties. At White Rose Squares we also felt it was the right time to hold a Beginners Class to introduce others to our great pastime, and the response has shown that people do want new things to do.
So it was against such a backdrop that our 44th Birthday Dance, that had been planned for two years, was held on Saturday 26 February 2022, a week after the country suffered atrocious weather - but on this weekend, the sun shone, and people traveled to support us from clubs in Leicester, Nottingham, Humberside and across North Yorkshire. We had a raffle, and shared a pot luck afternoon tea. And we had a great Caller!
We danced three squares - yes, it would have been nice to have some more there, but it was such an enjoyable afternoon that allowed everybody to dance Mainstream and Plus to one of the most experienced Callers in the country - Paul Bristow. New Graduates (and older!) were treated to his expert (and amiable) Calling, and realised why he is such a master of his craft. The music was varied, the dance fun - some challenging, and Paul still returned everyone to their "home", even when we could not work out how he did it!
Paul Bristow had previously Called seven of our Birthday Dances, the first being in 1987 - so we can't have put him off!!. We look forward to the next time.
