Northern Lights!

Yorkshire Federation Dance - Sponsored by White Rose Squares

Over recent years the Yorkshire Federation has promoted SSD dancing via regular SSD Dances, and this one was sponsored by White Rose Squares who asked the newer Callers in the North of the country to show what they could do!

So Lancashire and Yorkshire joined together in harmony (for once!) with Callers-in-training Carol Holman from Lune Valley Ocean Wavers, Heather Innes from Harmony Squares / White Rose Squares, and Nick Tillotson from White Rose Squares sharing the Calling at this SSD Dance on 25 October.

It was an excellent dance with 4 squares dancing and more people too.  A good atmosphere with contrasting music, changes in pace to provide dancers with some variety, and a crammed programme to keep people’s feet tapping.  A lot of thought had gone into the programme and the 3 newer Callers “did us proud” as we say up north!

Carol kicked off the afternoon with “Achy Breaky Heart” and had everybody singing along with “If I were a Rich Man”, Heather sand a lively “Don’t Cross the River” and ended the Dance for us with a high-spirited version of “City of New Orleans”.  Nick’s “Bollywood Patter” was followed by “I Can Hear Music” and he slowed the pace towards the end of the afternoon with “Lord of the Dance”.

The Master of Ceremonies was Gene Turner, who had been the mentor for the Yorkshire Callers and was on hand to offer advice if needed.

We had a calm and sunny golden autumn day for the event but had prepared in case it was cold with cookies, hot drinks and hot chocolate too!

White Rose Squares have a busy time ahead starting with our Hoedown on 29 November that is aimed at absolute novices to introduce them to square dancing (please note: this is not a Saturday Dance). But if you know of anybody in the Harrogate area who would like to try square dancing do tell them about it. Then we have a Beginners’ Class starting on 18 January 2026.  In March all the Yorkshire Federation clubs are taking part in the 2026 “Let’s Dance”.

Saturday 28 February 2026, 2pm to 5pm. This will be our 48th Birthday Dance, SSD alternated with MS & Plus, Caller Philip Mee.  At Clifford Village Hall, Albion St, Clifford, North Yorkshire, LS23 6HY.
