White Rose Squares 40th Aniversary Dance

With the approach of White Rose Squares 40th Anniversary the committee decided to mark this landmark Birthday Dance in a memorable fashion, and planning started a year before. Our club has some lovely records of the 25th Dance, held in 2003, and we decided to mimic that as far as possible. So we were delighted to secure the return of James Wyatt, who had called for us back in 2003, and we felt assured that a good evening was in store.

Having a dance in February gave us concern to choose a venue that was accessible in case of snow, and we finally settled on Saint Wilfred's Church hall, a large, warm, Grade 1 listed building near to the Cairn Hotel in Harrogate. And how lucky we were, for the dreadful snow that swept the country came a week after our dance!

Throughout the year we considered ways to make the evening a special one that we hoped would be successful, and provide happy memories for everyone - billed as a Grand Re-union Dance. We were not disappointed. On the night we were thrilled that so many former members and friends took the opportunity to come to renew friendships, and to remember their own days dancing at White Rose Squares.

A display of Club Scrapbooks, created over the years by former Secretary Ann White provided plenty of opportunity for checking out who was, or had been in the club, and to reminisce, and we had a Visitors Book on the night for comments to look back on.

Our dance attracted just short of 100 people, and danced 8 to 10 squares. James Wyatt created a lovely atmosphere, encouraging those who had not danced for a while, and the newer dancers (some of who had only graduated a few weeks before) to join in some tips.

On arrival everybody was greeted with Bucks Fizz or sparkling fruit juice, and given a 40th Anniversary memento of chocolates in a tiny red box printed with roses, as well as a souvenir programme that reminded everybody of the history of the club.  The progremme included the names of all of the Callers of White Rose Squares Club's Birthday Dance, as well as all White Rose Squares Club callers, and the current Club Members. (Thank goodness for all the details in those scrap books, and on our club web page!)

We held a special ''Ruby'' Raffle, had celebratory cakes including an iced fruit cake by Irene Brockie, and a lovely pot luck supper.

Presentations were made to our two most recent Club Callers - Cliff Anderton and John Mee, and to Founder Members (still dancing with us) Jackie White and Peter Binns - the men receiving Yorkshire Rose Cufflinks, and Jackie a Rose Brooch. James Wyatt was presented with wine, and Brenda Wyatt with a bouquet of flowers - and both thanked for a delightful evening supporting our club.

Photographs throughout the night - destined for another Club Scrap Book to remember the 40th - were taken by Barry Mallin of Wolds Weavers.

The committee were assisted by numerous club members who helped make our 40th Anniversary and Grand Re-union dance a really memorable night.

If you were one of our guests who joined us from all over England we hope you enjoyed it as much as we did............See you at our 50th.

Too logh to waite??........Our ''Summer Days Drifting Away Dance'' with Philip Mee Calling will be on Saturday 27th October 2018, 7.30 - 10.30pm at Clifford Village Hall. See our Comming Events page for details.
